How to add captions or subtitles to a video for free
To add captions to a video for free, open the captionrich Free Caption Generator, drop in your video, and let the on-device Whisper speech model transcribe it. The first visit downloads the model once; after that every video transcribes offline. Pick one of the animated caption styles, adjust the font, size, colors, and position under Customize, then click Export to render an MP4 with the captions burned in. If you need a subtitle file for YouTube, Premiere Pro, DaVinci Resolve, CapCut, or any other software, click SRT or VTT to download the same captions with identical timings. No sign-up, no watermark, no upload, and no length limit.
How it works
- 1
Drop in your video
Click the upload area or drag a video onto it. The file is read locally; nothing is uploaded to a server.
- 2
Let it transcribe on your device
On your first visit the browser downloads the Whisper speech model once and saves it. Transcription then runs locally, with a progress bar, for this and every future video.
- 3
Pick a style and customize
Choose an animated caption style, then open Customize to change the font, size, colors, active-word highlight, and where the captions sit on the video. The preview matches the export.
- 4
Export the MP4 or download subtitles
Click Export video for an MP4 with the captions burned in, rendered in your browser. Or click SRT or VTT to download a subtitle file with the same timings for YouTube or any editing software. Both download straight to your device.
What you get with the free caption generator
Speech-to-text runs on your device. The audio never leaves your browser, and there is no video length limit.
One-time model download: the speech model is cached in your browser, so every later video transcribes without waiting.
Animated caption styles with word-level timing, the same engine that powers the captionrich editor.
Customize font, size, colors, highlight, and position; drag the captions anywhere on the video.
Export a burned-in MP4 in your browser with no watermark and no sign-up.
Subtitle generator built in: download the captions as SRT (SubRip) or WebVTT files with the exact same timings, ready for YouTube, Premiere Pro, DaVinci Resolve, CapCut, or any player.
Detects the spoken language automatically across the languages Whisper supports.
FAQ
Questions about the free caption generator
Yes. There is no account, no credit card, no trial, and no watermark on the exported video. The free tool is limited to a handful of caption styles and does not include word editing or translation; those live in the captionrich editor, which has a free plan too.
Both. Captions are burned into the picture, which is what the MP4 export produces. Subtitles are a separate text track you upload next to the video. Click SRT or VTT under the preview to download the same captions as a subtitle file with identical timings, so it works as a free subtitle generator for YouTube, Vimeo, Premiere Pro, Final Cut Pro, DaVinci Resolve, CapCut, or any player that reads SRT or WebVTT.
SRT (SubRip) and WebVTT, the two formats every video platform and editor accepts. Both files carry exactly the cue timings you see in the preview, so a subtitle track uploaded to YouTube or imported into an editor lines up with the speech. Cues never overlap, the file is named after your video, and it is generated on your device.
No. The video stays in your browser. Speech recognition uses an open-source Whisper model that runs on your own device through WebGPU or WebAssembly, and the captioned MP4 is rendered locally as well. The only download is the speech model itself, once.
Because transcription happens on your device instead of on a server, your browser needs the model once. It is roughly 80 to 200 MB depending on your browser's hardware acceleration, and it is cached by the browser so future videos transcribe immediately, even offline.
The on-device model is OpenAI's Whisper base, which handles clear speech in most languages well but can miss names, jargon, or heavily accented audio. The captionrich editor uses a larger cloud speech model with up to 99% accuracy and lets you click any word to fix it.
Not in the free tool, which only exposes styling. Open the same video in the captionrich editor to click and correct any word, retime it, split or merge caption blocks, and highlight keywords. Word editing is available on the free plan.
The free tool includes the first four animated styles from the captionrich library, each fully customizable in font, size, color, highlight, and position. The remaining styles are shown locked; the captionrich editor unlocks the whole library, and Pro members can request custom templates.
Translation is a captionrich Pro feature. It translates the caption track into 50+ languages while keeping the word-level timing, so translated captions stay in sync with the speaker.
No. Because transcription and rendering run on your device, the practical limit is your computer's memory and patience: a 10-minute clip transcribes in a couple of minutes on a laptop with WebGPU, longer on a phone or a browser without hardware acceleration.
The MP4 has the styled captions rendered into the picture (open captions), so they look identical on TikTok, Instagram Reels, YouTube Shorts, and anywhere else the video is played. If you also want a separate subtitle file, click SRT or VTT to download one with the same timings.
Want every style, word editing, and translation?
The captionrich editor adds the full template library, click-to-fix words, AI translation to 50+ languages, silence and filler-word removal, B-roll, and cloud-accurate transcription. The Free plan includes 3 videos a month with no watermark.
