How to use a free online teleprompter with your camera app
To use a free online teleprompter, open the captionrich Free Teleprompter, paste your script, and press Float. The script opens in a small window that stays on top of every other app, so you can record with your normal camera app, Zoom, OBS, or a phone camera while you read. Set the speed in words per minute, tap the text once for the controls and once more to hide them, and drag the text to skip around. On a phone the prompt opens in Picture in Picture and keeps scrolling while you are in the camera app. Nothing is uploaded and there is no account. To add captions or cut the pauses afterwards, open the take in the captionrich editor.
How it works
- 1
Paste your script
Type in the script panel, paste from anywhere, or import a .txt file. Start a line with ## to drop a cue you can jump to. The draft autosaves locally.
- 2
Set speed and size
Pick a words-per-minute pace and a text size in the in-page preview. Press Play to rehearse. Drag the reading line to where your eyes sit closest to the camera.
- 3
Float it
Press Float. On desktop the script opens in a small window that stays on top of everything. On a phone or in Safari it opens in Picture in Picture, paused on the first line.
- 4
Record with your camera app
Open your camera app, hit record, and press play on the floating window. When the take is done, open the clip in the captionrich editor for captions, silence cuts, and text-based editing.
What you get with the free online teleprompter
Floats over any camera app: an always-on-top window on desktop Chrome, Edge, and Firefox, or Picture in Picture on iPhone, Android, and Safari.
Records nothing itself. Your camera app captures the take at full quality, so no browser recording, no webcam permission, and nothing to upload.
Clean reading surface: the controls stay hidden until you tap or hover, then hide again, so the window is all script.
Scroll speed in words per minute, play, pause, restart, drag to skip, and keyboard shortcuts for speed, size, mirror, and fullscreen.
Text size that reads the same on the page, in the floating window, and on a phone, with four high-contrast themes and three fonts.
Mirror mode and fullscreen for a beam-splitter glass rig or a second screen.
Cue markers from ## headings so you can jump to a section of a long script.
The script autosaves in this browser, so a refresh does not wipe the draft.
FAQ
Questions about the free online teleprompter
Yes. There is no account, no credit card, no trial, and nothing to install. The teleprompter is free because it runs in your browser rather than on our servers. Captioning the take, cutting silences, and editing the video by deleting words live in the captionrich editor, which has a free plan too.
No. The teleprompter never asks for camera or microphone access. You record with the camera app you already trust, at that app's full quality, and the file stays wherever that app saves it. The script stays in this browser, including the local autosave. Nothing is transmitted, stored, or logged on a server.
Chrome, Edge, and Firefox 151 or newer support the Document Picture-in-Picture API, which opens a small always-on-top window. The script scrolls there while you record in any other app. Tap the text once to show play, pause, speed, and text size; tap again to hide them. Resize the window by dragging its edge, and it remembers the size next time.
Tap Float. The teleprompter renders your script into a short silent video once, then opens it in Picture in Picture, paused on the first line. Switch to your camera app, press record, then tap play on the little window. Because it is a real video it keeps scrolling while the browser is in the background, with the system play, pause, and skip controls. This needs iOS 16.4 or newer or Chrome on Android. Set the script and text size before you float, since text changes need a re-render.
Yes. Turn on Mirror to flip the text horizontally so it reads correctly in the glass, go fullscreen, and pick a high-contrast theme. Keep the text size large and the reading line near the top so your eyeline stays on the lens. Space or K plays and pauses, the arrow keys change speed, and plus and minus change the size.
No. Voice scroll needs the microphone, and browser speech recognition sends audio to the browser vendor. This teleprompter is deliberately microphone-free. Set a words-per-minute pace instead, rehearse once with Play, and nudge the speed with the arrow keys or the floating controls while you read.
Start a line with ## followed by a title, or put --- on its own line. Those become jump targets in the cue list under the script. Click a cue to skip the prompt to that section without scrolling through everything in between.
Those are editor features, not teleprompter features. After you record with your camera app, open the clip in captionrich to auto-generate animated captions, remove silences and filler words, edit the video by deleting words from the transcript, and export an MP4 with no watermark. The Free plan includes 3 videos a month.
Got the take. Now make it a finished video.
captionrich turns the clip into an editable transcript: delete words to cut footage, strip silences and filler words, burn in animated captions in 40+ styles, and export an MP4 in your browser. No watermark on any plan, 3 videos a month free.
