How to trim a video online for free

To trim a video online for free, open the captionrich Free Video Trimmer, drop in your file, drag the start and end handles or type exact timecodes, preview the loop, and click Trim video. The cut is made in your browser with WebCodecs, so the file never uploads to a server, there is no watermark, no sign-up, and no length or size limit. The trimmed MP4 downloads in seconds.

How it works

  1. 1

    Drop in your video

Click the upload area or drag a video file onto it. The file stays in your browser and opens instantly with a filmstrip and a looping preview.

  2. 2

    Set the start and end

Drag the orange handles on the filmstrip, nudge them by 0.1 s with the arrow keys, or type exact timecodes. The preview loops only the part you keep.

  3. 3

    Choose Precise or Lossless

Precise re-encodes the clip so the cut lands on the exact frame. Lossless copies the original video data untouched and finishes instantly, snapping the cut to the nearest keyframes.

  4. 4

    Trim and download

Click Trim video, then Download. You get an MP4 named after your original file. Nothing was uploaded, so there is nothing to delete afterwards.

What you get with the free video trimmer

  • 100% private: your video never leaves your device; the trim runs on your own hardware.

  • Frame-accurate trims, plus a lossless mode that copies the original video data untouched and finishes instantly.

  • No sign-up, no watermark, no upload queue, and no limit on file size or video length.

  • Works with MP4, MOV, WebM, and MKV from phones, screen recorders, and cameras. The download is a universally playable MP4.

  • The preview loops only the part you keep, so you see and hear exactly what you get before you download.

  • Drag the handles, scrub the filmstrip, nudge with the arrow keys, or type exact timecodes.

FAQ

Questions about the free video trimmer

Yes, completely. There is no account, no watermark, no trial period, and no limit on how many videos you trim or how long they are. It is free because the work happens in your browser rather than on our servers, so trimming costs us nothing.

No. The file is opened locally by your browser and the trimmed MP4 is assembled on your device using WebCodecs. Nothing is transmitted, stored, or logged, so there is nothing to delete afterwards. You can even switch off your Wi-Fi after the page has loaded and the trimmer keeps working.

There is no limit set by us. Because everything runs in your browser, the practical ceiling is your device's memory: multi-gigabyte files work on most laptops, and the trimmed file is assembled in memory before it downloads. Lossless mode is the lighter option for very large sources.

Precise decodes and re-encodes the kept section with your browser's hardware video encoder, so the cut lands on the exact frame you chose. Lossless copies the original compressed video data without re-encoding. It is instant and bit-exact, but a cut can only start on a keyframe, so the clip may begin and end up to a few seconds outside your handles depending on how the source was encoded.

In Lossless mode, none: the video and audio data are copied byte for byte. In Precise mode the kept section is re-encoded once at a high bitrate using your browser's hardware encoder, which is visually indistinguishable from the original for typical phone, camera, and screen-recording footage.

MP4, MOV, WebM, and MKV files containing H.264, HEVC/H.265, VP9, or AV1 video, which covers anything your browser can play. Precise trims download as an H.264 MP4 so they play everywhere; Lossless trims keep the original codec inside an MP4 container.

Yes. The trimmer works in Safari on iOS and Chrome on Android, including drag handles sized for touch. Precise mode needs WebCodecs, which recent iOS and Android browsers support; on an older browser the tool automatically uses Lossless mode instead.

This tool makes one cut: a start and an end. To remove sections from the middle, delete silences and filler words, or cut by deleting words from a transcript, open the same clip in the captionrich editor. It runs in the browser too and the Free plan includes 3 videos a month with no watermark.

Yes. Precise mode trims the audio to the same sample as the video cut. Lossless mode starts the audio at the same keyframe the video starts on, so the two stay aligned throughout the clip.
